Carlos Alcaraz overcame a mid-match blip against Fabian Marozsan to book his place in the third round of the French Open on Wednesday.

The Spaniard, who earned his 20th win at Roland-Garros, needed four sets to overcome Maroszan 6-1 4-6 6-1 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier in two hours and nine minutes.

Alcaraz started strongly with a four-game winning streak, and though the Hungarian clawed a game back and successfully defended two set points, he could not do so a third time.

Marozsan broke Alcaraz's serve in the first game of the second set, and did not look back even as he faced five break points. He served out the set, holding his nerve after the second seed had taken the first point.

Alcaraz shook off that dip in spectacular fashion, with two three-match winning streaks on either side of dropping a game to get back into the driver's seat.

The Spaniard showed his aggression, and despite trading breaks with Marozsan, he finished by winning the last four games in a row, converting match point at the first attempt.

He will face either Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Damir Dzumhur in the next round.

Elsewhere, two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud was stunned in four sets by Nuno Borges.

Borges became the first Portuguese man to reach the third round in the tournament's history with his 2-6 6-4 6-1 6-0 victory.

Ruud made a fast start on Wednesday to cruise through the first set, but Borges got the vital break in the fifth game of the second to pull level.

From the third set onwards, the Norwegian visibly struggled with a knee injury, which he received treatment for, and only won one game in the second half of the match.

Borges' reward for earning his maiden victory over a top-10 opponent is a meeting with Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

Data Debrief: Alcaraz closes in on Nadal

Not since 2019-20 has anyone retained the French Open crown, with Rafael Nadal doing so on that occasion, but Alcaraz kept his title defence alive in the French capital.

Alcaraz (83.8%, 98-19) trails only Nadal (90.5%) and Bjorn Borg (86.1%) in the Open Era for winning percentage on clay at ATP level – minimum 25 matches.

Since 2000, Alcaraz (23 matches) has become the second-fastest player to claim 20 men's singles match wins at Roland-Garros, after Nadal (20).
