Rickie Fowler and Max Homa both failed to qualify for next week's U.S. Open on Monday, having lost in a play-off to Cameron Young.

Monday saw 47 places at the year's third major, which will be held at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, decided across 10 qualification events.

The sixth and final qualification spot to be decided at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus went to a five-way play-off between Young, Fowler, Homa, Eric Cole and Chase Johnson.

A 12-foot birdie putt at the first extra hole saw Young clinch his place at the U.S. Open, at the expense of 2014 runner-up Fowler and six-time PGA Tour winner Homa.

Having recently split from his caddie, Homa was the only player carrying his own bag at the event and had to do so for a gruelling 38 holes.

Homa had played 22 consecutive majors after missing The Open in 2019.

Fowler, meanwhile, saw a run of seven straight major appearances end when he missed The Masters earlier this year.

The U.S. Open begins on Thursday, June 12 and runs to Sunday, June 15.
