Cooper Flagg was not able to truly celebrate making NBA history as the Dallas Mavericks fell to a 140-133 defeat to the Utah Jazz on Monday.

Flagg scored 42 points, setting a new benchmark for an 18-year-old in the NBA.

LeBron James held the record previously, having put up 37 points in December 2003.

The Mavs are now 10-17 for the season, and Flagg is more concerned with their form than his personal achievements.

"Obviously, we didn't win. So, it's tough for me to want to be happy or any of that," said Flagg, who turns 19 on Sunday.

"But obviously, it's a success.

"I've got to be better. I had a couple of dumb turnovers, missed a couple of easy ones, but I got to be better, executing down the stretch like that.

"I'm not really focused on a lot of that stuff [the records]. I'm more just focused on being present, day to day, and trying to get better and getting our team as many wins as we can."

Flagg has averaged 25.7 points across his past seven games. Against the Jazz, he registered seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

He became just the third teenager in the NBA to record at least 40 points, five rebounds and five assists in a game, after James and Kevin Durant.

"The more time he spends on the floor, the more he sees, the better he gets. He displayed it all tonight," Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said.
