Charles Leclerc quipped that Ferrari are "P-nowhere" after their qualifying disaster at the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Leclerc was quick enough only for 11th on the grid for Sunday's race, while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start one place behind the Monegasque.

Ferrari hoped upgrades to the rear of their car would put them closer to the front, but both drivers were knocked out in the second qualifying session for the first time this season.

While Hamilton apologised to the team, a frustrated Leclerc repeated "my God" several times on the radio.

"You can always do more with a lap and improve a few things. We are just P-nowhere," Leclerc told Sky Sports.

"There's just not enough performance in the car and I keep repeating myself. There's not the potential that I would hope in the car at the moment, we need to be better."

And Leclerc, who is fifth in the drivers' championship with 53 points, did not have high hopes for the race.

"I can fight as much as I want, but I cannot do miracles," Leclerc added. "This is what there is in the car, and I'm trying to extract the maximum from it."

Hamilton added that he was "devastated" after suffering another blow in his first season at Ferrari.

Oscar Piastri claimed pole position for McLaren, with Max Verstappen in second and Hamilton's former team-mate George Russell in third for Mercedes.

"It's a tough one, ultimately I feel super gutted and devastated that we weren't able to get through," Hamilton added.

"I really feel like we've made so many positive steps through the weekend, the car was generally feeling better, and the brakes were better, the balance was really nice.

"In Q2 in run one, it felt decent but when we put the new tyres on, for some reason it just didn't have any grip and couldn't go any faster.

"It's just devastating to see everyone working so hard in the garage to be in Italy for the first Italian with me and for me at Ferrari, not making it to Q3 is definitely bittersweet."
