Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick will stay on as the club's permanent head coach.

The 44-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford, through to June 2028.

Carrick took over following Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January, originally on an interim basis to the end of the season, and has overseen a brilliant second half of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, securing United Champions League football.

They have already confirmed third place with a game to spare, their best finish since 2022-23, when they finished in the same position.

Since Carrick's first game in charge – a 2-1 Manchester derby win on January 17 – no team has won more games (11) or points (36) than United in the Premier League, while only Manchester City (31) have scored more goals (30).

"From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United," Carrick told the club's website.

"Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

"Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

"Now it's time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again."

Carrick has won 11 of his 16 games in charge of United (D3 L2), with a 68.8% win rate during that time.

In fact, he has the best points-per-game average of any manager in the Premier League this season (2.25 – P16 W11 D3 L2). Indeed, it is the best by any United manager in a league season since Alex Ferguson's final campaign in 2012-13 (2.34).

He is also up for the Premier League Manager of the Year award, alongside Guardiola, who confirmed he would be leaving Man City after 10 years on Friday, along with Mikel Arteta, Andoni Iraola, Keith Andrews and Regis Le Bris.

United will finish their campaign away to Brighton on Sunday. They are looking to complete the double over Brighton for the first time since 2020-21, though they have lost six of their last eight league matches against the Seagulls (W2).
