Keith Andrews insisted Brentford are taking the EFL Cup "very seriously" and are "going to attack it as hard as we can".

Brentford booked their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 2-1 win over Reading on Tuesday.

Callum Wilson opened the scoring at Select Car Leasing Stadium after just three minutes, while Fabio Carvalho netted in first-half stoppage time, with both goals assisted by Dango Ouattara.

Reading threatened a comeback when Paudie O'Connor pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute, but the Bees hung on to reach the next round.

Brentford were more dominant than the scoreline suggests, accumulating 3.21 expected goals (xG) to Reading's 1.4 and creating eight Opta-defined big chances while having 70.9% possession.

Igor Thiago came off the bench to register 0.68 xG, the highest of any player, while Mikkel Damsgaard created four chances and completed 37 passes in the final third.

"We took it very seriously in the last round and we did again tonight," said Andrews.

"It's a serious competition for us, we want to go as far as we can. There's no reason why we can't.

"We're going to attack it as hard as we can."

Andrews also commented on the state of refereeing in the country, after the uproar from Manchester City's controversial win over Manchester United on Sunday.

"I always felt as a player there was a relationship with an official that was built on respect and being able to speak to each other in a certain way," said Andrews.

"We've gone away from allowing them to officiate and allowing them to make mistakes and I think it is a real shame.

"Now they are having to go back to that and it's not the habits they have had in recent years."
