Alexander Zverev held off Quentin Halys in the Shanghai Masters third round to earn his 60th ATP Tour-level win of 2026.

The two-time grand slam winner did not have it all his own way but overcame a stern test to prevail 6-4 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes.

Zverev set the tone early on, earning a break in the opening game – on his seventh break-point attempt – and after both players stayed on serve for the rest of the set, it was enough for him to take the lead.

The pair remained evenly matched in the second set, with both looking very strong on serve as they went all the way to a tie-break.

Zverev looked to be in control when he got match point at 6-5 up and 8-7, having held off a set point in between, but Halys finished strong, winning three straight points to force a decider.

The German bounced back quickly, though, beginning the third set with a three-game winning streak.

Halys could not mount another fightback or put his opponent under pressure, however, winning just four points across Zverev's final three service games.

"I feel like this year I've been picking my places where I want to peak, and I feel like I did that quite well," Zverev said.

"I didn't do that in the early stages of my career. I wanted to play well every single tournament, and I feel like this year I've been working through a lot of tournaments.

"I've had maybe some losses I shouldn't have had, but it paid off because I won two grand slams and peaked at the right moments and made another final at Wimbledon.

"So I'm happy with that, but I think that 60 wins doesn't tell the whole story."

Zverev will face Alexander Bublik in the fourth round after the Kazakh came from behind to beat Brandon Nakashima 6-7 (7-9) 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

Alex De Minaur will also join them in the next round after a 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 win over Rei Sakamoto, while Jakub Mensik progressed with a 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory over Francisco Cerundolo.

Zverev turns on the style in Shanghai

Zverev has reached a 59th round of 16 at ATP Masters 1000 events, equalling Andre Agassi (59) for the eighth-most since the format's introduction in 1990.

He is also through to the last 16 in Shanghai for the sixth time – only Novak Djokovic (11), Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych (seven each) will have reached more in the event's history.

Zverev has enjoyed a stellar campaign so far, with his first two grand slam titles, and the chance to become world number one still in his sights.

This is the third time that he has won 60 matches in a single season, after 2018 (when he finished with 60) and 2024 (69).

While he is an eight-time ATP Masters 1000 champion, Zverev is chasing his first title in Shanghai, where his best result is a championship-match appearance in 2019.
