Alexander Zverev cruised into the second round of the Halle Open with a straight-sets win over Marcos Giron.

Zverev reached the Stuttgart Open final last week, losing out to Taylor Fritz, but bounced back with a 6-1 6-2 victory on Wednesday.

After pulling back to 2-2, Giron struggled to muster a fight as Zverev reeled off four games in a row.

The Frenchman did his best to prevent the world number three from taking the first set, defending four set points, only for Zverev to take it on the fifth attempt.

And the home favourite got an early break in the second set as he raced into a 3-0 lead. Though Giron pulled a game back, Zverev comfortably got over the line.

"It was a great match from me," Zverev said. "I thought it was quite high level.

"Maybe he wanted to play a bit better than he did, but I felt like I didn't let him play that well, which was important for me. A good start to the tournament, and I'm looking forward to [the next round]."

Zverev will face Lorenzo Sonego in the next round.

Daniil Medvedev is also through in Halle, booking his place in the quarter-finals by earning his 400th career win to see off Quentin Halys.

He recorded a 6-2 7-5 victory over the Frenchman, needing just 25 minutes to take the first set.

Halys pushed back in the second, though, matching Medvedev as he took a 5-4 lead on serve. However, the Russian got the all-important break, with a three-game winning streak completing the match.

Data Debrief: Can Zverev end his pursuit of elusive home grass title?

Zverev extended his record to 19-8 in Halle, but is still searching for his first title on German grass, having reached three such finals.

He has reached the final twice at the event before (in 2016 and 2017), while reaching the semi-finals in each of the last two years.

Zverev was in strong form on Wednesday, hitting 10 aces, while he did not face a single break point, though he converted four of the nine he forced.
