Raul Jimenez said never losing belief was the key for Wolves after his last-gasp winner downed Sheffield United in the Championship on Sunday.

Wolves' winless run looked set to extend to a third game as – following a 4-2 defeat at West Ham and a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City – they were frustrated at Bramall Lane.

Having seen Fer Lopez and Marshall Munetsi pass up decent chances in the first half, Cesar Peixoto's team survived plenty of close calls as they struggled for rhythm in the second period.

But with stoppage time looming, three substitutes combined to snatch the points for Wolves. Kieran Trippier's clever cutback fell the way of Tommy Doyle, who helped the ball on for Jimenez to fire into an open goal from almost beneath the crossbar.

It was Jimenez's first goal from open play since returning to Molineux on a free transfer and his third overall, following penalties at home to Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

He told Sky Sports afterwards: "It's amazing, winning is an excellent feeling and doing it like this is always different. We never stopped believing, and that's our prize.

"We came here after two bad results, a defeat and a draw. We always want to win; it was important to win and keep fighting for the top of the league."

Having kept their first clean sheet of the Championship campaign, Wolves sit seventh in the table with 11 points from six matches. They have a game in hand on most of the teams above them and a huge Black Country derby against West Brom to come next week.

Remarking on Wolves' strength in depth, Doyle said: "When Kieran crossed it in, it took a deflection, and I thought I'd pass instead of shooting. He is always in the right place."
