Luke Shaw insists Manchester United's players will take full responsibility for their humbling 6-1 defeat to Tottenham.

United, who had Anthony Martial sent off and were 4-1 down by half-time, lost with a whimper at Old Trafford on Sunday, suffering their joint-heaviest home Premier League defeat.

Two goals apiece from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane and strikes from Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier did the damage for Spurs, as Jose Mourinho inflicted a humiliating result on his former club.

Shaw, who was somewhat fortunate not to receive a red card for a lunge on Lucas Moura late on, conceded there are no excuses.

"A lack of concentration, sloppiness, a mistake, another mistake, even more mistakes," Shaw told Sky Sports.

"The red card didn't help but even after the first goal we switched off. It really hurts. A club like Manchester United shouldn't be losing, and they shouldn't be losing in this way so it really hurts and it's kind of embarrassing because I feel like we've let a lot of people down today.

"We let ourselves down and the staff down, it really hurts.

"Whoever's on the pitch, whatever the scoreline is, the players on the pitch are the ones who have to take the responsibility.

"We get given tactics, responsibilities that players need to do but when you're on the pitch the manager can give advice, but we're on the pitch.

"We have very high standards. We have that quality but it hasn't been showing. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror individually but as a team collectively we're nowhere near it at the moment."

While United's camp were left to reflect on their miserable performance, Spurs talisman Kane lauded Tottenham's ruthless streak, with the hosts having initially taken the lead through Bruno Fernandes' spot-kick.

"We got off to the worst possible start. But we felt good before the game, everyone was ready for a fight," Kane, who has been directly involved in 20 goals in his last 11 games in all competitions for Spurs, told Sky Sports.

"Our reaction showed that, getting two goals. Getting the third and fourth changed the game, then it was about staying focused and taking our chances when they came.

"We felt really good before the game. It was the worst start but the way we reacted showed the mindset we were in."
