Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool's new frontline to keep stepping up as they continue to find their groove in the post-Mohamed Salah era.

Salah left Liverpool at the end of last season, cutting his contract short by a year, to bring down the curtain on a glittering stint at Anfield.

He scored 257 goals in 442 games for the club, with only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285) above him in Liverpool's all-time charts.

Salah was also the 10th player to become a single club's leading all-time scorer and assister in the Premier League, with his 191 goals putting him a long way clear of second-placed Robbie Fowler (128) for the Reds.

However, Liverpool have not been crying out for Salah this season, with Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Bradley Bracola and Florian Wirtz seemingly starting to find their groove under Andoni Iraola.

They also have the impressive Rio Ngumoha, who has proven a game-changer when he has featured.

"I think it is the reality. What Mo has done for so many years as a winger, I don't think anyone can replicate that," Van Dijk said.

"Hopefully it is going to happen, but what he did was incredible. The same goes with Sadio [Mane] and Bobby [Roberto Firmino].

"Hopefully that is going to happen again, and that is what we work for, but now it is time for others, and others have to step up.

"We can always think it was better back in the day, but that is not the mentality that it should be at a club like Liverpool, and I don't feel it has ever been.

"The club will always move on at a certain point, and there are always players who will shine and perform for the club.

"It is down to these players who are here now to show it every three or four days.

"The second goal was class, but there are plenty of moments already this season that they have been very good.

"At a club like Liverpool, you have to do it every three or four days. That is always the challenge, but it is a nice challenge. I'm pretty confident that it is going to be fine."

Only Erling Haaland (nine) has scored more Premier League goals this season than Isak (six), who has scored in three consecutive appearances in the competition for the first time since January 2025 for Newcastle United (run of eight).

Isak scored in their 2-0 win over Brighton – with Barcola getting the assist – to help move Liverpool up to fourth in the table, six points behind leaders Man City.
