Sam Burns will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the U.S. Open on Sunday, after a superb finish to the third round at Oakmont.

The American had been the overnight leader heading into Saturday's round and maintained that advantage as he moved to four-under after carding a one-under 69, with three birdies and two bogeys.

J.J. Spaun, the leader after round one, remains one shot back after bogeying the final hole, while Adam Scott rolled back the years to push himself into contention. He sits tied with Spaun after he shot a three-under 67, thanks to birdies on the 13th, 14th and 17th.

"If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, but this golf course is difficult," said Burns. "It takes a lot of patience."

"It [winning a major] would be incredible. I think as a kid growing up, you dream about winning major championships, and that's why we practice so hard and work so hard."

Viktor Hovland is also a threat, despite hitting two trees and a flagstick during his round, as he reached level-par and sits three shots back on one-under heading into the final day.

Carlos Ortiz also impressed by finishing with the joint-best round in the field, along with Scott, a three-under 67, and is on even par with one round remaining.

Like Burns, Hovland is still chasing his first major win, and was delighted to make sure he is still in the mix with only 18 holes left.

"Pretty pleased with how I battled out there," Hovland said. "A little bitter about my driver. Just can't seem to figure it out. It's like a lingering problem all this year, so it's kind of p****** me off.

"I'm well aware that I've got a chance, and if I shoot a low round of golf [on Sunday], then anything can happen. But there's a lot of good players around me. Adam Scott played a brilliant round, just didn't really miss a shot. That forces me to play some really good golf."
