Chelsea moved back up to third in the Women's Super League as they bounced back from back-to-back defeats with a 2-0 win over rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Sonia Bompastor's side remain nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who were beaten by Arsenal earlier in the day.

Spurs nearly went in front after 11 minutes as Olivia Holdt roamed forward with the ball and tried her luck from 25 yards out, but her shot cannoned off the crossbar.

The hosts continued to threaten as neat work down the flank from Julie Blakstad created an opening, with her cross picking out Bethany English, but her volley flew over.

Despite being under pressure, the Blues took the lead in the 39th minute as Spurs failed to properly deal with a corner from Erin Cuthbert, eventually leading to the unmarked Keira Walsh finding the back of the net.

The visitors began the second half strongly and would double their lead five minutes after the break, as Alyssa Thompson scored on the rebound after Lize Kope had kept out an effort at goal from Sjoeke Nusken.

Sandy Baltimore missed an opportunity to add a third, while Cathinka Tandberg headed over at the other end, but Chelsea were able to hold on for all three points.

Data Debrief: Chelsea continue dominant record over Tottenham as Thompson scores again

Prior to this, Chelsea had lost consecutive WSL matches for the first time since July 2015, last losing three in a row during the final six matches of the 2013 campaign, and they ensured a return to winning ways here.

The result continued a dominant record that Chelsea have over Tottenham – they have now won each of their last 18 games against Spurs across all competitions in the WSL era by an aggregate score of 49-10, including all eight away from home.

Furthermore, Tottenham have now lost each of their 13 WSL meetings with Chelsea, which is the most times one side has faced another in the competition without winning a single point.

Thompson proved to be pivotal in front of goal once more, and she now has six goals in the WSL this season - that tally is already the third most ever by a non-English player for the reigning champions in a campaign while aged 21 or under, after Erin Cuthbert in 2018-19 (eight for Chelsea) and Kim Little in 2012 (seven for Arsenal).
