Swiatek retires from Marid Open clash due to illness
Iga Swiatek retired from her Madrid Open match with Ann Li due to illness.
Swiatek trailed 3-0 in the third set before shaking hands with her opponent and leaving the court in tears.
Li immediately put the pressure on Swiatek, breaking the Pole's serve in the opening game of the first, though Swiatek broke back soon after to get back on serve.
The pair exchanged breaks once again before reaching the tiebreak, where Li clinched the first with her only set point.
Swiatek was back to her best in the second, racing into a 4-0 lead before forcing a decider, but she was unable to continue.
Feel better soon Iga!

Earlier on Saturday, Mirra Andreeva booked her place in the last 16 with a straight-sets win over Dalma Galfi.
Andreeva won 6-3 6-2 in the Spanish capital, setting up a round-of-16 tie with Anna Bondar.
Data Debrief: Li breaks new ground
Swiatek, ranked fourth, is the highest-ranked opponent Li has defeated in her career; she has a 2-10 record against top 10 opponents, defeating seventh seed Anett Kontaveit at the Miami Open in 2022.
Andreeva, meanwhile, has reached a 14th career round of 16 at WTA-1000 events; only Coco Gauff (16) has reached more among teenagers since the format's introduction in 2009.
