Swiatek kickstarts clay swing with Stuttgart win over Siegemund
Iga Swiatek kickstarted her clay-court swing with a routine 6-2 6-3 victory over home favourite Laura Siegemund at the Stuttgart Open.
The two-time Stuttgart champion – who recently linked up with Rafael Nadal's former coach Francisco Roig – needed exactly an hour and a half to reach the quarter-finals.
She will meet either Alycia Parks or Mirra Andreeva in the last eight, after the Russian fought back to defeat 2025 champion Jelena Ostapenko in a last-32 tie on Wednesday.
Swiatek broke at the very first attempt, and though Siegemund fought back in game five, the former world number one swiftly registered two more breaks to take the opening set.
She had to have more patience in the second, which started with five straight holds. And once again, after Swiatek did finally break, she surrendered that advantage to leave the set back on serve at 4-3.
But Swiatek was not to be denied, and she converted her second break point in game eight to wrestle back the initiative, before serving out her first clay-court win of the year.

Data Debrief: Clay queen Swiatek back on song
Last time out at the Miami Open, Swiatek saw a sensational run of 73 consecutive victories when playing her opening match at WTA tournaments brought to a halt, losing to compatriot Magda Linette.
But Swiatek will hope to start another lengthy run after getting past the first hurdle here, taking her career record on clay to 104-15.
And a win in her next match will take the Pole to her first semi-final of the year, having lost four straight quarter-finals in a run that started in Wuhan last year.
