Iga Swiatek wasted little time in finding her rhythm at the Madrid Open after she defeated Daria Snigur in straight sets.

The 2024 Madrid Open champion needed just 61 minutes to win 6-1 6-2 in the Spanish capital, setting up a third-round tie against either Alycia Parks or Ann Li.

Swiatek converted each of her first two break-point opportunities on her way to taking a 4-0 lead in the first set, but did have to save three such points in the following game.

After seeing out the first, Swiatek faced more resistance from Snigur, who broke the fourth seed's serve to threaten an unlikely comeback.

However, Swiatek responded by reeling off six consecutive games, converting three of a possible four break points in the second and securing victory with her first match point.

Elsewhere, seventh seed Elina Svitolina was stunned by Anna Bondar, who won in straight sets.

Bondar converted just one break point in each set as she clinched a 6-3 6-4 victory, which is one of the biggest of her career.

Data Debrief: Swiatek produces the good on clay again

No player has claimed more wins from their first 11 main draw appearances in clay WTA-1000 events since the format's introduction in 2009 than Swiatek (39), with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both winning 37 matches in that time.

Bondar, meanwhile, has claimed her first career top-10 win; she is the first player from Hungary to achieve the feat since Timea Babos (2018 versus Coco Vandeweghe) and the first on clay since Agnes Szavay (2009 against Venus Williams).
