Sinner remains world number one after Alcaraz withdraws from Barcelona
Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Barcelona Open due to a right wrist injury sustained in his opening-round win over Otto Virtanen.
Alcaraz required medical treatment for wrist pain during his 6-4 6-2 win over his Finnish opponent, and the tournament confirmed he would play no further part in Spain.
The seven-time major winner was due to play Tomas Machac in the second round, but he will now rest up ahead of the clay swing continuing with the Madrid and Italian Opens.
Alcaraz knew that winning in Barcelona for the third time in his career would see him replace Jannik Sinner at the top of the ATP rankings, after the Italian's Monte-Carlo triumph last week.
Instead, the Spaniard finds himself 390 points behind his rival, while also potentially facing a race against time to fit for the second major of the year at Roland-Garros in May.
A statement from the Barcelona Open read: "Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the BCNOpenBS after undergoing a test on his right wrist this morning."

There is, however, still hope that a Spanish player will win the tournament after Rafael Jodar beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
The wildcard is now just the third Spanish teenager this century to reach the Barcelona quarter-finals, joining 12-time winner Rafael Nadal (2005, 2006) and Alcaraz (2022, 2023).
"Playing at home, it feels different," Jodar said when comparing his two meetings with Carabelli. "I'm super happy how the crowd supported me from the first point.
"I really appreciated that, and I'm super grateful. I'm trying to manage the nerves in the best way possible.
"It's sometimes difficult, but you have to try and handle the pressure and important moments in the best way possible."
Earlier in the day, third seed Alex de Minaur was stunned by Hamad Medjedovic, with the Serbian earning a 6-3 6-4 victory to tee up a clash with Nuno Borges.
