Sinner overcomes Hanfmann at Halle Open
Jannik Sinner overcame a tough first set to dispatch Yannick Hanfmann in his first match since his remarkable French Open final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz.
The world number one squandered three match points en route to a thrilling five-set defeat to Alcaraz at Roland-Garros on June 8.
But Sinner returned to action in style on Tuesday, defeating Hanfmann 7-5 6-3 to progress at the Halle Open.
World number 138 Hanfmann gave his all in the opening set, holding his own on serve until Sinner finally got the break in the final game.
Yet after missing two break opportunities at the start of the second set, Hanfmann fell away as Sinner's quality shone through once the Italian had nosed himself clear at 4-2.
Sinner served out the victory with a blistering ace, with Alexander Bublik next up for the top seed.
Earlier in the day, top young prospect Joao Fonseca suffered an early exit as he went down 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-8) to Flavio Cobolli.
