Jannik Sinner put on a late surge to protect his record-breaking sets streak alive and beat Alex Michelsen to book his place in the Miami Open quarter-finals.

Sinner looked on course to end his run of consecutive sets won in ATP Masters 1000 events, but a spirited comeback saw him earn a 7-5 7-6 (7-4) win in one hour and 42 minutes.

There was little to split the pair in the early stages, though Sinner started to show his threat, forcing three break points in the ninth game, but Michelsen defended them all.

The American could not do the same on his next service game, though, as Sinner took the advantage.

However, the Italian blinked first in the second set, as Michelsen went a break up to storm into a 5-2 lead and put himself on the brink of forcing a decider.

But Sinner soon fought back to level the score and then force a tie-break in which Michelsen let another lead slip through his grasp as the world number two came back to seal his spot in the last eight.

"I didn't feel my best tennis today, so I tried to find a way through," Sinner said.

"I know myself a little bit better now, so I know that every day can be a little bit different."

Data Debrief: Sinner staying perfect

Since 2000, Sinner is now just the fourth player to claim 15+ consecutive men's singles match wins at the 'Sunshine Double' after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

And since 1990, he (39) is just the fifth player to achieve 20 ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals in fewer than 40 main draw appearances after Stefan Edberg (26), Rafael Nadal (32), Pete Sampras (33) and Djokovic (34).

The 24-year-old is only the third man to reach the last eight in all of his first five appearances in Miami, joining Yannick Noah and Edberg.

By rallying to his straight-sets win, he has now won 26 consecutive sets in the format, extending his record.
