Jannik Sinner cruised into the Qatar Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday.

The world number two prevailed 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 25 minutes, breezing to the win without dropping a game on serve in Doha.

Both players were very strong with the ball in hand in the opening set, with Sinner winning 88% of his first-serve points to Popyrin's 85%.

However, the Italian made a crucial inroad in the sixth game, and did not concede another point after that on his way to taking the first set.

It was a similar story in the second, with both players holding serve until the 11th game, when Sinner pounced on his second break point of the set before serving out the match.

Sinner will face Jakub Mensik in the last eight after the 20-year-old beat Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets.

Mensik won 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour, securing his 10th ATP Tour win of the season already.

Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev's search for a second tour-level title this season was stunted by a 6-3 6-4 defeat against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Data Debrief: Sinner's ruthlessness continues

Following his win over world number 53 Popyrin, Sinner has now won 50 consecutive matches against players ranked outside the ATP top 50.

His last such defeat came against Dusan Lajovic in Cincinnati in 2023.

This was also his 12th straight win in ATP 500 tournaments, setting him on his way to another potential showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.
