Sinner avoids upset against rising star Jodar to progress to Madrid semis
Jannik Sinner booked his place in the Madrid Open semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over promising youngster Rafael Jodar.
The world number one defeated the 19-year-old 6-2 7-6 (7-0) and will face either Arthur Fils or Jiri Lehecka in the last eight of the competition.
While Sinner faced some resistance in the first set, saving two break points, back-to-back breaks in the fifth and seventh games gave the Italian the lead.
Jodar, who won a Tour title in Morocco earlier this month before also reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona, threatened to force a third set, but could not convert any of his five break-point opportunities in the second.
Sinner squandered three break points of his own, but his quality once again came to the fore in the tiebreak.
The 24-year-old won the tiebreak to love, closing out the victory with a powerful forehand down the line.

Data Debrief: Sinner stays perfect at Masters 1000 in 2026
Sinner, who won in Monte-Carlo, Miami and Indian Wells, is now just the third player in the format's history to reach the semi-finals at the first four ATP Masters 1000 events of a season, after Roger Federer (2006) and Rafael Nadal (2010-11).
The Italian is also the sixth player to reach the last four at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events since Shanghai's inauguration in 2009, after Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Federer, Andy Murray and Alexander Zverev.
This was also the third time in his career Sinner won a tiebreak to love at ATP Level, though he lost the match on the previous two occasions (against Carlos Alcaraz in 2022 and Daniel Altmaier in 2023).
