Liam Rosenior expects an "emotional" return to Hull City in the FA Cup and wants Chelsea to approach the tie the same way they would the Premier League or Champions League.

Rosenior's first permanent managerial role came at Hull, where he took charge from November 2022 to May 2024. He was dismissed shortly after narrowly missing out on the play-offs.

The 41-year-old also spent five years with the Tigers as a player between 2010 and 2015, making 161 appearances in all competitions, and helping them to the FA Cup final in 2014.

And Rosenior is looking forward to going back to the MKM Stadium on Friday for their fourth-round clash.

"Hull City is very special for me," he said. "My grandma was a season ticket holder. I've got my family going up as the club means a lot to me for many reasons.

"Hopefully, we can put on a really good show; it will be amazing to go back.

"Without Hull, without the experience of being there as a player and as a manager, I would not be sitting here. I've got a lot to thank the club for, and I had some amazing times there, both as a player and as a coach.

"It's really good to see them doing so well in the league. It's a great club, great people, great fans, a great city. It's going to be an emotional one for me to go back."

Chelsea have progressed from all eight of their FA Cup ties against Hull – it is their joint-best 100% progress rate by a team against another in the competition's history, along with Leicester City and Birmingham City.

And the Blues have also progressed from 62 of their last 64 FA Cup ties against sides from outside the Premier League, although both defeats in this run have been against Yorkshire teams (Barnsley in 2007-08 and Bradford City in 2014-15).

Despite Chelsea's strong record against Hull, who have won just one of their last 35 games against the west London side in all competitions (D8 L26), Rosenior urged for caution against the team flying high in the Championship.

"This is going to be a difficult game, and I want to do well in this competition," Rosenior added.

"I don't see it any differently than a Premier League game or a Champions League game.

"We will go there with a team I think will be good enough to win the game. I will want to take this game really seriously. We're going to have to because they're in good form and used to winning games at the moment."

Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella for the match, however, with the defender missing out through injury.
