Pegula toppled by Samsonova as Paolini bows out in Berlin
Jessica Pegula was on the end of a shock result at the Berlin Open, where Jasmine Paolini was also dumped out.
World number three Pegula went down 6-7 (8-10) 7-5 7-6 (7-5) in a tight tussle with 2021 Berlin champion Liudmila Samsonova, who followed up her first-round victory over Naomi Osaka in style.
Samsonova, ranked 20th in the world, fended off two match points at 5-4 down in the deciding set of a clash that lasted well over three hours, holding her nerve on serve to force the tie-breaker.
And Pegula could not regain the momentum, with Samsonova breaking the American to take the match at the first opportunity.
Pegula's defeat followed on from Ons Jabeur, another former winner in Berlin, beating world number five Paolini 6-1 6-3.

Paula Badosa, meanwhile, reached her fourth WTA Tour-level quarter-final of the season by seeing off Emma Navarro 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.
Data Debrief: Ons back at it
Jabeur's struggles over the past year or so have been sad to see. The Tunisian has some so close to grand slam glory on multiple occasions, only to fall short at the final hurdle.
Her victory over Paolini marked the first time she has beaten a top-five opponent since 2023. It is her eighth such win overall.
Jabeur is into her fourth quarter-final of 2025, though she has failed to win any of those previous matches. In fact, she has lost her last eight quarter-final ties.
