Newcastle United ended Hull City's unbeaten start to the Premier League season, as two quickfire goals secured them a 2-1 victory at St. James' Park.

Joe Willock and Lewis Hall both hit the back of the net inside the opening seven minutes, immediately helping them to put the memories of Monday's disappointing loss to Leeds United behind them.

But Yoane Wissa had a spot-kick saved just before the break, helping to set up a nervy ending after Mohamed-Ali Cho scored in the second half, but Hull could not find an equaliser. 

It took Newcastle less than three minutes to break the deadlock. Willock's first shot was blocked, but Hull could not clear their lines, and Harvey Barnes was able to recycle it to the 27-year-old, who took a touch before drilling it into the near-bottom corner.

Their lead was doubled just four minutes later as Hull's defence was all at sea once again. Barnes drove forward from the halfway line before Hall – one of three Newcastle attackers against two defenders – slotted into the bottom-right corner.

Mohamed Belloumi was handed a golden chance to halve the deficit, with Lukas Hornicek's failed skill gifting him the ball in the box, but the goalkeeper recovered well to hold onto the resulting shot.

Jacob Murphy then fired wide before Hall stretched to blaze one over, and the former then won a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Sorba Thomas got in a tangle with Lewis Miley in the box and went to ground, sticking out an arm to trip Murphy, but Wissa's spot-kick was tipped away by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Belloumi kept pushing, with two attempts flying over the crossbar, but his 67th-minute throughball into Cho was perfectly weighted as the substitute picked out the bottom-left corner. 

Hornicek then pounced to keep out a long-range curler from Belloumi, who was leading the charge for Hull, before Tim Iroegbunam rushed onto a loose ball in the box, only to send his looping effort just over the top-right corner.

Newcastle hold their nerve 

After Monday's disappointing loss to Leeds, Matthias Jaissle would have been targeting a quick start, and his Newcastle players certainly delivered.

This is the earliest the Magpies have gone 2-0 up in a Premier League home game since April 2023 against Tottenham (Joelinton netted the second goal in the sixth minute).

Barnes was instrumental with his two assists. This is the earliest into a Premier League game that a Newcastle player has registered multiple assists, taking the record from Fabian Schar (nine minutes v Spurs in April 2023).

As for Willock, he scored his second league goal of the 2026-27 season, one more than in his previous three league campaigns combined.

Hull endured a lacklustre first half, but improved after the break, firing off 18 second-half attempts at Newcastle's goal, but only three of those were on target, and the home defence stood firm.

They showed their fighting spirit to the end, with Belloumi looking particularly impressive. He has been involved in four goals (two goals, two assists) in the top-flight this season, the joint-most by a Hull player in their first five matches in the competition.

It was a disappointing day in the end for the newly promoted side, who suffered their first-ever Premier League defeat at St. James' Park, though the result should not come as too much of a surprise – Newcastle have never lost a home match in the competition when leading by 2+ goals at the break (W69 D4).
