Tyrique George's excellent strike capped off a confidence-boosting 3-1 victory for Everton over Newcastle United at Murrayfield Stadium.

The Premier League rivals clashed in a pre-season friendly in Edinburgh on Wednesday, with Newcastle well beaten in Matthias Jaissle's second match in charge.

Newcastle started brightly, but Everton weathered the storm and went ahead in the 27th minute.

Thierno Barry led a counter, and though Lewis Hall made a great tackle, Harrison Armstrong played a neat reverse pass into Everton's striker, who finished into the bottom-right corner.

Everton had their second nine minutes later. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was felled by Joelinton in the Newcastle area and Iliman Ndiaye, who had earlier shot straight at Lukas Hornicek at the end of a sweeping move, coolly converted the resulting penalty.

The Toffees took complete control in the second half, with George particularly influential, setting up Hayden Hackney for a darting run into the box on two occasions.

George got the goal his performance merited in superb fashion, too, taking in Armstrong's pass and, on the turn, arrowing a finish into the left-hand corner.

Harvey Barnes grabbed a late consolation for Newcastle, but the Magpies looked well short with just 11 days remaining until the start of their Premier League campaign.

George and Armstrong shine bright

Moyes is a hard manager to earn the trust of, especially for younger players, but both George and Armstrong demonstrated why Evertonians are so excited about their prospects.

George, signed permanently from Chelsea following a promising loan stint last season, was a constant menace down the left of Everton's attack.

His direct approach forced Newcastle's defence into a retreat, and when he did get a shot off, he ensured it was a good one, giving Hornicek no chance with his fine finish.

Armstrong, meanwhile, helped Everton run the show in midfield, and he grabbed two assists for his efforts, while Barry led the Toffees' line brilliantly.

They round out their pre-season preparations against Lille on Saturday, while Newcastle have a double-header against Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg.
