New Zealand cruise past England by four wickets despite Brook’s record knock
New Zealand beat England by four wickets with 80 balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series at Bay Oval, overcoming a record-breaking lone effort from Harry Brook.
England's innings began disastrously as the top order crumbled to 10-4 within six overs, with debutant Zak Foulkes producing a sensational new-ball spell to claim 4-27.
Despite the early collapse, Brook launched a counterattack of remarkable quality, blasting 135 from 101 balls - including nine fours and 11 sixes - to lift the tourists to 223 all out in 35.2 overs.
His innings accounted for more than 60% of the team’s total, breaking a long-standing national record. Jamie Overton offered support with a gritty 46 in a seventh-wicket stand worth 87.
New Zealand's reply was equally shaky at 24-3 after early breakthroughs from Luke Wood and Brydon Carse, who dismissed Kane Williamson for a golden duck.
Nevertheless, Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings with a composed 78, sharing a crucial 92-run partnership with Michael Bracewell, who struck a run-a-ball 51.
Their batting guided the hosts comfortably past the target with more than 13 overs to spare, sealing a convincing win despite Brook's heroic resistance.

Data Debrief: Brook shines in England defeat
Despite defeat, Brook set a captain's example with his 135-run haul. This was his fourth century in New Zealand, and the highest percentage of England's ODI total in a completed innings (60.5%).
Brook's 11 sixes in the match rank as the fourth-highest total by any England male player in ODI history.
On the contrary, it was a disappointing day at the crease for Williamson, who recorded his first golden duck in 15 years of ODIs.
