Moyes eager for Everton to kick on after reaching magic 40-point mark
David Moyes wants to see Everton kick on after reaching the magic 40-point mark, with Tuesday's meeting with Burnley offering the Toffees a chance to boost their European hopes.
Everton earned an eye-catching 3-2 success over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday, with Thierno Barry scoring an 83rd-minute winner and Jordan Pickford making an incredible injury-time save to deny Sandro Tonali.
They now have 40 points from 28 games and sit eighth in the table, and a victory over Scott Parker's struggling Clarets would provide a further boost to their top-seven hopes.
"We take quite a lot of satisfaction. We have got there with 10 games to go," Moyes said of reaching 40 points early, after a difficult few years for the club.
"I have always been looking beyond 40 points, but there is always something in the back of your mind.
"Our recent history has not been much better than reaching that total. I've talked about us doing more than that and hopefully we can."
Everton are winless in their last six Premier League home games (D2 L4), though, last going longer without a home win in October 1998 (nine matches).
The Toffees have lost their last two at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and they have not lost three home league matches in a row since a run of four losses at Goodison Park in 2023.
Everton have won 24 of their points on the road this term, but Moyes believes teething problems were always likely following their relocation, saying: "If we have to take all the points away from home and don't do so well as home...

"If you go through the history books and look at the teams who have moved to new stadiums, it's never been that easy, certainly in the first year."
Burnley recovered from 3-0 down to draw level with Brentford on Saturday at Turf Moor, but after seeing a potential fourth goal from Zian Flemming disallowed, they conceded a stoppage-time winner to Mikkel Damsgaard, leaving them eight points adrift of safety.
Asked if he still believed Burnley could stay up, Parker said: "There has always been belief. This is a young group and at times they are learning, you are seeing that shine through.
"Whether that is enough to bring success this year... you are at least seeing things being engraved in this team that are paramount to being successful."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Everton – Thierno Barry
After scoring in none of his first 14 Premier League appearances for Everton, Barry has now scored six in his last 14.
His winner against Newcastle last time out was his first goal from the bench in the competition, and it could be enough to earn him a start here.

Burnley – Zian Flemming
Flemming has scored six of Burnley's 17 away goals in the Premier League this season.
Only Chris Wood in 2020-21 has ever scored more on the road in a single Premier League campaign for the Clarets (seven).
MATCH PREDICTION – EVERTON WIN
In addition to Everton's poor form at Hill Dickinson Stadium, they have also struggled against newly promoted sides recently.
The Toffees have failed to win any of their four such matches in the Premier League this season (D3 L1).
Only once has Moyes had a longer winless run against promoted teams as the Toffees' manager, going five without a victory between March and November 2010.
Burnley, meanwhile, have come from behind to avoid defeat in three of their last four away league games (W1 D2 L1).
Indeed, only in 2018-19 have they recovered more points from losing positions on the road in a Premier League season (seven) than they have in 2025-26 (six).
But even if the Clarets are showing fight, their hopes of survival appear very slim. Burnley have scored more goals when losing than any other side in the Premier League this season (21), and they are outsiders for this one, according to the Opta supercomputer.
