Michael Carrick assured Mason Mount's substitution in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain was merely a precaution to avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Bryan Mbeumo cancelled out Ibrahim Mbaye's early opener in the first half to salvage United a draw in Gothenburg, though the Red Devils arguably had the better chances.

Mbeumo saw a few efforts saved by Matvey Safonov, while Shea Lacey saw a shot deflect wide of the empty net when the goalkeeper rushed towards the halfway line to make a clearance.

Mount, who has impressed so far in pre-season, was taken off after just 18 minutes, but Carrick is hopeful it is an impact injury.

"He just got a kick," said Carrick. "So, we just wanted [it] to be a precaution really, to look after him.

"We want to keep the group strong, and we've been fortunate to get everyone to this stage fit and well, so we wanted to be careful with that."

PSG opened the scoring after just two minutes, cutting through United's defence to leave Mbaye with a simple close-range finish.

But Carrick's side responded well against the European champions and limited them to very few chances throughout the rest of the match.

"The things that we were trying to get out of the game, a lot of them were there," he explained to MUTV.

"It's good sometimes that the boys have to solve problems and find their way a little bit. We don't want to always give them the answers when we don't have to.

"It prepares them a little bit for the season as well. In that respect, there are a lot of things people don't always see that we were quite happy with. There were some good signs there."
