Medvedev edges out Zverev to reach Halle Open final
Daniil Medvedev secured his spot in the Halle Open final after beating Alexander Zverev in an epic contest.
Medvedev prevailed 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 after three hours and one minute of action.
Both players won their service games in a tightly contested first set, but Medvedev raced to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak and nosed himself in front with a third set point.
Medvedev had the chance to avoid a deciding third set right before the tiebreaker in the second.
He failed to convert three match points before Zverev dominated to force a third set.
Zverev lost his serve early in the third but then had four chances to break back in the following game, none of which were taken.
Medvedev was able to see the match through this time, setting up a final against either Alexander Bublik or Karen Khachanov, though it is another crushing blow in what is turning into a hugely frustrating season for Zverev.
