The Dallas Cowboys will have a new coach next season.

The Cowboys decided on Monday to move on from Mike McCarthy as coach, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

McCarthy's contract with Dallas expired following the 2024 season, and the two sides were reportedly unable to come to an agreement on the length of a new deal.

McCarthy is now a free agent, and the Chicago Bears had requested an interview with him for their head coaching vacancy last week. The New Orleans Saints have also been rumoured to be interested in him.

The Cowboys went 7-10 this season to miss the play-offs for the first time since McCarthy's first season in Dallas in 2020 after going 12-5 in each of the last three years. During his five years in Dallas, the Cowboys won two NFC East titles, made three play-off appearances and went 49-35 - tied with the Minnesota Vikings for the eighth-best record in the NFL in that span - but they only won one post-season game and the franchise hasn't reached the NFC championship game since the 1995 season.

This season fell apart early for Dallas, as the team lost three of its first 10 games and quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence also went on injured reserve, while Pro Bowl edge rusher Micah Parsons missed four games with an injured ankle.

Prior to arriving in Dallas, McCarthy coached the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons, helping them to a Super Bowl title during the 2010 season.

His all-time coaching record is 174-112-2 to rank 12th in NFL history in coaching wins.
