Madrid Open champion Marta Kostyuk has pulled out of the Italian Open due to a hip injury.

Kostyuk won the biggest title of her career last Sunday, beating Mirra Andreeva 6-3 7-5 to clinch the trophy.

She was hoping to become just the fourth woman to win both Madrid and Roma back-to-back, after Dinara Safina, Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek, but the Ukrainian will not have the chance.

Kostyuk, who is unbeaten in all 11 matches on clay this year, also won the title in Rouen, but is struggling with a right hip issue that will keep her sidelined for at least the next two weeks.

"This one hurts," she said in a statement on social media.

"After the best stretch of my career, I was looking forward to Rome. But sometimes your body has other plans, and over the past few days, I've been dealing with a hip issue.

"With my ankle still not fully at 100%, it's just not smart to keep pushing right now, so I won't be competing there this year.

"I'm sad to miss it, but I'll see you next year. Now it's time to recover and get ready for Paris."

The French Open will begin on May 18.
