Jana Fernandez scored a 92nd-minute own goal as Liverpool salvaged a 2-2 draw against London City Lionesses at St Helens Stadium on Sunday.

London City appeared set for a fifth Women's Super League victory in a row after Freya Godfrey and Kadidiatou Diani struck, following Beata Olsson's penalty for the Reds.

But Liverpool, who dominated the second half, got their rewards in the closing stages, with the unfortunate Fernandez turning Cornelia Kapocs' cross into her own net.

The Reds opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Jenna Clark was brought down inside the area by Mapi Leon, with Olsson ruthlessly dispatching from 12 yards out.

However, London City hit back three minutes later. Khiara Keating was caught dawdling on the ball by Godfrey, who pinched possession and rolled into the empty net.

The visitors completed the turnaround just before half-time through Diani, with the London City striker pouncing on another mistake, this time from Alejandra Bernabe, to score.

Liverpool piled on the pressure after the break, with Elene Lete denying Natalia Ramos' curling attempt before Kapocs clipped the crossbar with a deep delivery into the box.

Gareth Taylor's side got the goal their performance merited in stoppage time, but Liverpool's winless run in the WSL stretched to three matches as they stay down in 10th.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea came from a goal down to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 and temporarily go top of the table, ahead of the Manchester derby later on Sunday.

Molly Bartrip had put Palace into a 20th-minute lead, but a moment of individual quality from Melvine Malard hauled the Blues level as she picked out the top-right corner.

Chelsea and Malard doubled their respective tallies in the 75th minute, with Sandy Baltimore coming off the bench to score a penalty on the stroke of full-time to seal the win.

Aston Villa's resurgence under interim head coach Brian Sorensen also continued, with the Villans coming out on top in a five-goal thriller with Everton, winning 3-2.

London City lose ground as Malard keeps Chelsea unbeaten

After spending big during the summer, London City have made a strong start to the 2026-27 campaign, though they were outfought in the second half against Liverpool and were perhaps fortunate to even come away with a point.

London City registered an expected goals (xG) total of 2.09 from their 10 attempts in the first half, but they were restricted to a tally of 0.08 from the two shots they managed after the break.

However, Liverpool were unable to convert that improved second-half display into three points. The Reds remain winless in each of their last six league games against London City (D4 L2), since a 1-0 away triumph in December 2020 in the WSL2.

But for Chelsea, they can enjoy being top of the WSL for a couple of hours before Manchester City and Manchester United lock horns, with Malard taking her goal tally in the league to four. Only Victoria Pelova (five), Oceane Hurtre (six) and Khadija Shaw (seven) have netted more this season.

In the WSL era, Chelsea have now won each of their eight matches against Palace in all competitions by an aggregate score of 28-1, while they are unbeaten in each of their last 39 WSL games across September, October and November (W34 D5), since a 2-1 loss away to Liverpool in September 2022.
