Marta Kostyuk captured the first WTA 1000 title of her career with a straight-sets victory over Mirra Andreeva in the Madrid Open final.

The Ukrainian stunned the ninth seed to land her second piece of silverware this season, prevailing 6-3 7-5 after 81 minutes.

Kostyuk was dominant on serve early on, winning 12 of her opening 14 points, before breaking Andreeva in the sixth game.

The teenager looked like she would respond after forcing two break points in the ninth. However, her opponent recovered to see out the opening set.

Kostyuk's solidity on serve seemed to desert her early in the second set, as she fell 3-1 behind.

The Ukrainian immediately responded, but faced two set points at 5-4 down. The world number 23 recovered and broke in the following game, before sinking to the ground when Andreeva fired long on her second championship point.

Data Debrief: Kostyuk gets her big break

Kostyuk became the second-lowest ranked Madrid Open champion, higher than only Aravane Rezai in 2010 (24th in the WTA rankings).

The Ukrainian capitalised on her opportunities, converting all four break points compared to just two from six for Andreeva.

Her victory means that the player winning the opening set has gone on to lift the trophy in 15 of the last 16 Madrid Open finals.
