Virat Kohli is determined to "unlock a new version" of himself after his century helped India to an eight-wicket win in their first ODI against the West Indies.

India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, wrapping up the victory with 50 balls to spare as Kohli led their charge alongside Shubman Gill.

Kohli's stand was his 55th – and third-fastest – century in ODIs as he reached 15,000 runs in the format, making him the second person to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar.

West Indies started strongly, with John Campbell (62) and Justin Greaves (101) combining smartly at the start, while Amir Jangoo also got an unbeaten half-century (58 not out).

Kuldeep Yadav (4-40) played his part, though, and helped stop the tourists at 295-7 by the end of their innings.

India then showed their strength with the bat, even with Rohit Sharma dismissed for 32 in the 12th over.

Gill reached 110 before his stand was ended, but Kohli stayed until the end, plundering 139 in his knock as India completed their chase at 300-2.

"I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and, you know, play a gear to higher end," Kohli said.

"That was exciting for me to work on. Again, it excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career, which will eventually help, you know, anything that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL.

"It's really helped me a lot to play with a free mind, and I think that's what's working for me.

"My focus has never really been on these milestones, so to say. It's just understanding the situation along the course of just doing the job for the team, whatever, you know.

"Achievements come along; obviously, I feel very grateful and very blessed to be in this position for having played for so long. And, yeah, just keeping my head down, working hard and thanking God for everything that I've been blessed with."

Elsewhere, South Africa sealed an ODI series win over Australia after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead with their 32-run victory on Sunday.

It is their sixth successive bilateral series win over Australia after they defended the fifth-highest total at the Wanderers.

South Africa put up a mammoth total of 365-9 in their innings, with Temba Bavuma (103) and David Miller (142) leading their charge.

Australia did their best to chase down the total but were skittled out for 333 despite scores of 84 for both Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, as all but one of South Africa's bowlers took a wicket.

"Another good all-round team performance," Bavuma said. "Unbelievable innings by David and then the bowlers as well; they put us under pressure, but a couple of wickets put them on the back foot.

"I was able to take my time with the bat and build some partnerships. It's nice to contribute. There was a lot more spin than was expected. I think the way the spin complemented our attack was great."
