South Africa’s Marco Jansen believes the spinners will now take centre-stage in their second Test against India after the fast bowler took six wickets on day three.

The Proteas bowled the hosts out for just 201 before putting 26-0 on the board ahead of stumps to increase their lead to 314 runs in Guwahati.

Jansen ended with figures of 6-48 from 19.5 overs, while Simon Harmer also contributed with three wickets.

That marked Jansen’s fourth five-wicket haul of his Test career, and his first against India, as he has now taken 88 scalps in total in the longest format.

And his ability to bowl a high-quality bouncer proved crucial for South Africa, with Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant, Nitish Reddy Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja all falling to the short ball.

Jansen was delighted to make an impact in India, where he feels he has struggled previously, but he has now backed the spinners to dominate the final two days.

“Once we saw there was bounce and pace in the wicket, we tried to utilise it. Good day for the chaps – myself in particular,” said Jansen.

“When I got my first wicket with the bouncer, we said 'okay cool, let's see how long this is going to work.'

“The spinners did a really good job when the ball wasn't moving too much. There was a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket, which was nice.

“We were preparing to field for two days. Today was just about trying to do the job for the team.

“I still think it's a good wicket. The ball is starting to turn now. The spinners are definitely going to play a role.

“I've always struggled bowling in India, whether it was white-ball or red-ball, and I'm still jealous of people that get the ball to squat and nip back.

“Yesterday was a perfect example. (I bowled a ball) that went over off stump because I'm so tall. For a different bowler, like KG [Kagiso Rabada] that's hitting top of off, so I've always been jealous of those people where they're a bit shorter than me.”
