Even after putting up a career-high 52 points in the San Antonio Spurs' win over the Dallas Mavericks, Victor Wembanyama was still not entirely satisfied, declaring: "It should be like this more often."

Wembanyama's staggering display was key to San Antonio holding off a late push from the Mavs to win 112-111 and improving to 6-2 for the season, dropping Dallas to 4-4.

As well as shooting 16-of-26 from the field and making 19-of-23 from the free-throw line, Wembanyama tallied 23 rebounds and eight blocks.

He became the first player with at least 50 points and 20 rebounds in a one-point win since Wilt Chamberlain in 1964, with Elgin Baylor the only other player to produce such a stat line in NBA history.

And, since blocks started being officially recorded in the 1973-74 season, Wembanyama is the first player to have eight blocks in addition to 50 points and 20 rebounds in a game.

Prior to halftime, Wembanyama also made history by becoming the first player to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single half of NBA play.

And all that came after the 22-year-old struggled with illness, as he said: "It's just figuring things out. Sometimes, you're just one step ahead.

"Also, I haven't been feeling great lately. I've been sick, and I felt like I got my legs back.

"So, it should be more like this more often."

And San Antonio team-mate Dylan Harper was keen to play up the comparisons between Wembanyama and Chamberlain.

"He's basically Wilt," Harper said. "The other team tries to do everything. They throw out any adjustment, every adjustment.

"It's hard to keep the big fella out of the paint. He's so dominant when he screens and rolls.

"He knows how to get to his spots. He's great at the free-throw line. So, for us, it's just how do we get him the ball and how do we get the low man away from him?"

The Spurs are back in action on Friday, versus the Sacramento Kings in the NBA Cup, while the Mavericks face the Utah Jazz on the same day.
