Andy Farrell believes his Ireland side "missed a chance to be ruthless" in their Nations Championship victory over Argentina on Friday.

Ireland thrashed Los Pumas 42-12 in Dublin, with Hugo Keenan scoring a hat-trick to send his side top of the North group ahead of Saturday's action.

Argentina made a fast start as Mateo Carreras crossed in the ninth minute, but Keenan then scored tries either side of Dan Sheehan in a blistering 15-minute spell before the break.

Sam Prendergast added to the scoreline early in the second half, and though Carreras crossed again for the visitors, Keenan completed his hat-trick in the 49th minute.

Ireland's final try came six minutes later through Ronan Kelleher, with Argentina unable to mount a comeback.

Farrell's side had 59% territory and edged possession, but the Ireland boss still felt his side could have imposed themselves more.

"The scoreline is a good one because not many teams do that to Argentina, they are a dangerous side," Farrell said.

"I thought there was outstanding stuff and some clinical stuff, but I think the story of the game is we missed a chance to be ruthless.

"Having said that, the opportunities we had in the right end of the field showed the dominance in field position and territory.

"I thought the back three were outstanding. Hugo Keenan, 22 months since he played here and didn't remember what side of the pitch we warmed up, which was a bit of an insult.

"He was immense. Same with Mack and Rob. They pace they put onto the ball and they were a threat. I'm delighted with the back three."

Ireland host Fiji and South Africa in their final two group matches in the competition, hoping to edge France and Scotland to top spot.
