West Indies pulled off their highest-ever chase in ODIs as they defeated India by five wickets to avoid a series whitewash.

Shai Hope produced a true captain's performance, scoring an unbeaten 162 as an opener as West Indies chased down 352 in New Chandigarh.

India won the toss and chose to bat, though Jayden Seales (3-62) made early inroads as he dismissed Shubman Gill (1) and Virat Kohli (0) from back-to-back deliveries.

However, Rohit Sharma scored 92 off 85 while Ruturaj Gaikwad's 57 off 69 further steadied the ship for the hosts, before KL Rahul's unbeaten 129 helped them reach 351-7.

John Campbell (10) fell early for West Indies in their chase, to Mohammed Siraj (1-52), but Hope and Amir Jangoo (67) put on a 109-run stand to get things back on track.

Keemo Paul also added 44 as Hope continued to frustrate the India bowlers, and though he battled through injury during his innings, he got his side across the line with 10 balls remaining.

There was some joy for India elsewhere as they defeated Pakistan in the Asian Games final. Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh to win the bronze medal.

Hope gives West Indies much-needed boost

West Indies were understandably downcast after failing to defend 405 in the second ODI, which in turn saw them lose the series, but their captain stood tall to restore some confidence in the third match.

Hope is the first wicket-keeper batter to score 150 in an ODI, and his score was even more impressive considering he was out in the middle for the entirety of the match (India batted the whole 50 overs).

He has now scored 21 ODI centuries, five of which have come against India, after also doing so in the second ODI.

The two sides will now take part in a five-match T20I series, and the batters have set the tone for what could be a thrilling series.
