'I am a soldier' – Wissa vows to fight for Newcastle future
Yoane Wissa has vowed to fight for his place at Newcastle United amid rumours of a potential exit from St. James Park this summer.
Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford in a reported £50m transfer less than 12 months ago, but has failed to hit the heights in an injury-disrupted campaign.
The 29-year-old has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe's side in 2025-26, scoring just three goals as well as providing one assist.
He sustained a knee injury just days after completing his big-money switch and was signed, along with Nick Woltemade, to fill the gap left by the departing Alexander Isak.
Wissa did not make his debut for the club until December against Burnley, though of his outings for the Magpies this season, only eight have been from the start.
And with Newcastle 14th in the Premier League, it has been reported that Wissa could be moved on at the end of the campaign, but the striker does not plan on going anywhere.
"I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is," Wissa told Joel Beya TV.
"I hope I'm going to do better. It's such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt. I didn't wait for the proper time to come back [from injury].
"It should have definitely been more. You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn't right."

Wissa has also received the backing of Howe in recent weeks, with the Newcastle boss confident the striker will be back to his best heading into the new campaign.
His switch to Tyneside came after netting 19 Premier League goals last season, a tally only former Brentford team-mate Bryan Mbeumo, Chris Wood (both 20), Erling Haaland (22), Isak (23) and Mohamed Salah (29) could better.
Newcastle face Europe-chasing Brighton on Saturday and Wissa will be hoping to play a part in trying to turn the Magpies' recent fortunes around.
Howe's side have lost their last four league games, with a 1-0 loss at Arsenal following three consecutive 2-1 defeats.
They last lost five in a row in January 2021, while only Wolves between May and August 2021 have ever had five successive one-goal defeats in the Premier League.
