Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the opening Ashes Test with a hamstring injury.

The 34-year-old, who suffered a muscle strain while playing for New South Wales on Wednesday, had initially been cleared to play, until further scans uncovered the issue.

Hazlewood joins Pat Cummins and Sean Abbott in missing the first Test, which begins at Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday.

Cummins is set to return for the second Test in Brisbane, which starts on December 4, but it remains to be seen whether Hazlewood will have recovered in time.

"Josh Hazlewood underwent repeat imaging that has confirmed a hamstring strain injury," a statement from Australia read.

"Initial scans on Wednesday were clear of muscle strain, however follow-up imaging has confirmed the injury. Early imaging can occasionally underestimate low-grade muscle injuries.

"As a result, Hazlewood will not travel to Perth and has been ruled out of the first Ashes Test match."

Meanwhile, England's Mark Wood has been cleared to feature in the opening Test, despite suffering a hamstring issue of his own.

The fast bowler, who had knee surgery on the same left leg earlier this year, underwent a scan after leaving the field during his side's Ashes warm-up match against England Lions.
