Havertz potentially in line for Arsenal return against Newcastle
Mikel Arteta hinted that Kai Havertz could make his return from injury for Arsenal against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Havertz had to undergo surgery on a hamstring injury in February and looked set to miss the rest of the season.
However, he could feature in Arsenal's final two games of the Premier League season.
Despite missing the last three months, Havertz is still Arsenal's top scorer in the top-flight this season, having scored nine goals. Overall, he has netted 15 times in all competitions, also a team-high.
"We're going to decide that [on Saturday]. He's done certain parts of the sessions in the last two days," Arteta told reporters ahead of Sunday's game.
"He looks in great shape, but the medical staff need to give clearance and how Kai feels. [It's] unbelievable, it's a credit to him and the medical staff, and they've been pushing each other.
"We know how important Kai is for us. He looks in great shape... and you see the transformation on him, which is really impressive."
Arsenal have yet to wrap up second place in the league despite holding the position for much of the season, but a win on Sunday will confirm their place in next season’s Champions League.
However, if they lose to Newcastle, Eddie Howe's side will leapfrog them in the table.
Newcastle have won three games against Arsenal this season, 1-0 in the Premier League and 2-0 in both legs of the EFL Cup semi-final en route to winning the trophy.
However, Arsenal have lost just one of their last 20 Premier League home games against Newcastle (W17 D2), winning 11 of the last 12, while drawing the other. Their last loss against the Magpies on home turf was back in November 2010.
"It's our chance as well to finish in second place," Arteta added. "We're going to need a big one [performance], be very clinical.
"How thin the margins are with [Newcastle] and how clinical we have to be in front of them to score the goals.
"It's been a phenomenal effort from all of them under the circumstances. Last home game is always a special occasion, and it is our chance to wrap up Champions League qualification.
"A beautiful moment to say thank you to all of our supporters who have been on every journey and in every ground."
