Haliburton lost for words as Pacers reach NBA Finals for first time in 25 years
The Indiana Pacers' star man Tyrese Haliburton was lost for words after helping them to the NBA Finals for the first time in 25 years on Saturday.
The Pacers beat the New York Knicks 4-2 in the Eastern Conference finals, ending the series with a 125-108 victory in Game 6 to set up their first finals series since 2000.
"I can't put into words how special this group is. And how much this means to us," said Haliburton, as quoted by ESPN.
"We just talked about it... man, this is what we got together to do. To do something special, and we're part of it right now."
Indiana will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, which begin on Thursday in Oklahoma City.
Haliburton registered 21 points, 13 assists and six rebounds against the Knicks on Saturday, although Pascal Siakam won the Larry Bird Trophy as the Eastern Conference finals MVP after scoring 30 points during the series.
"It is rewarding to be in this position. To be able to get to this level and having an opportunity to play for an NBA championship, that's amazing," said Siakam.
"I think you enjoy tonight, and then after that, we have to move forward. We've got a team out there that's waiting for us that's serious. They're the best team in the NBA. So that's the challenge.
"I was telling the guys, for me, I got [to the Finals] when I was in year three [with the Toronto Raptors in 2019] and I thought I would get back there a lot.
"It didn't happen. So it's a hell of an opportunity, and you don't know when you're going to get it again."
The Pacers' improbable playoff run has included dispatching the Milwaukee Bucks and upsetting the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, both in five games, before beating the Knicks for the fourth straight playoff series.
They also trailed by eight points with fewer than one minute remaining on three occasions during the playoffs before coming back to win.
"This group has been special, pulled off some very special things. We don't take it for granted at all." said Pacers coach Rick Carlisle.
