Ben Griffin leads the Memorial Tournament after the first round, in which he produced a clinical finish to end the day.

The 29-year-old leads by two shots at Muirfield Village Golf Club after he carded a seven-under 65 in the opening round.

The highlight of his first round came at the par-five seventh, which he eagled.

Despite back-to-back bogeys at the 11th and 12th, he birdied four of the last five holes to finish the round strong.

Griffin won his first individual PGA Tour title at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week.

"It was an incredible day," Griffin said.

"Kind of building on what I was doing last week, making a ton of birdies, staying aggressive.

"This is one of the toughest golf courses we play on tour and you've got to be on your game to make birdies and give yourself a lot of looks."

Collin Morikawa, who has finished as runner-up twice at this event, is two shots behind Griffin on five under.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry is slightly further back, tied fourth on three under following a round of 69.

Meanwhile, defending champion Scottie Scheffler carded a two-under 70 first round, five shots behind the lead.

The event features a cut on Friday from 72 players to the top 50 and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead.
