Shubman Gill marked his first match as India's Test captain with a century, with Yashasvi Jaiswal also adding a sparkling ton as they dominated England on day one of their first Test.

England won the toss, but elected to bowl at Headingley, a decision that the tourists soon punished as they stormed to 359-3 on Friday.

Jaiswal (101) was in fine form, surviving an early blow to the ribs from Brydon Carse, and putting up a 91-run partnership with KL Rahul (42) before he was caught by Joe Root.

It was one of two quick wickets before lunch, with Sai Sudharsan taken for a duck on debut by Ben Stokes (2-43) just five balls later.

However, that opened the door for Gill (127 not out), who scored his fastest Test 50 (56 balls), though India were halted slightly as Stokes re-entered the fray, dismissing Jaiswal with his third ball after tea.

Rishabh Pant picked up where the opener had left off, though, and has put together a 138-run partnership with Gill for the fourth wicket so far.

Pant got away with one as his steepling top edge was only just out of Zak Crawley's reach, meaning he will start day two at the crease alongside Gill, looking to build on his 65 not out.

Data Debrief: India prove batting future is bright

Following Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirements, Gill has stepped into the captaincy and proven that he can lead the team with style so far in the first of the five-match Test series.

He became the fifth India captain to hit a century in his first Test in charge, following Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Kohli.

Jaiswal, meanwhile, took his total Test runs against England to 813 with his knock of 101, which included 16 fours and one six, reaching that haul in just 10 innings.

England have won their last five men's Tests at Headingley, bowling first on the day in each of those five wins. However, they may face an uphill battle to extend that streak, unless they can improve on day two.
