Coco Gauff booked her place in the last 16 of the US Open with a routine victory over Cristina Bucsa.

The fourth seed won 6-3 6-4 in under 90 minutes, recording her eighth consecutive straight-sets win on the WTA Tour.

After defending a break point, Bucsa converted one of her own to put some early pressure on Gauff, who responded with back-to-back breaks in the sixth and eighth games to win the first set.

The second started more evenly, though three consecutive breaks, two of which went in favour of Gauff, saw the home favourite eventually clinch victory with her first match point.

Iga Swiatek also progressed into the round of 16 with a straight-sets win, but did things the hard way against Marie Bouzkova.

The Pole won 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-3), claiming two tie-breaks in a single match for the first time in her professional career.

2026 French Open champion Mirra Andreeva defeated Nikola Bartunkova 6-2 7-6 (7-5) to set up a last-16 clash with Anastasia Potapova, who beat Amanda Anisimova 6-2 7-5.

Gauff in imperious form

Gauff has not won the US Open since 2023, but the American is in incredible form on home soil, having also won the Cincinnati Open ahead of the final major of the year.

Only Aryna Sabalenka (11 between Brisbane and the Australian Open) has claimed more consecutive straight sets wins than Gauff (eight, since the third round in Cincinnati) this season.

Meanwhile, multiple players (Swiatek and Sabalenka) have made the fourth round in women’s singles at the US Open for six consecutive editions of the event for the first time since Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin and Lindsay Davenport between 2001 and 2006.

And since the 2019 French Open, when she made her first, only Novak Djokovic (25) has made more singles grand slam fourth rounds than Swiatek (23).

Andreeva is also thriving; only Maria Sharapova (12) and Gauff (10) have made more women’s singles grand slam fourth rounds as a teenager than Andreeva (nine, equalling Nicole Vaidisova) in the 2000s.
