French Open: Sabalenka reaches third straight Roland-Garros quarter-final
Aryna Sabalenka booked her place in a third consecutive French Open quarter-final with a straight-sets win over Amanda Anisimova on Sunday.
Sabalenka has struggled against the American in the past but overcame her in two competitive sets to record a 7-5 6-3 win in one hour and 32 minutes.
The world number one went a break up to take a 3-1 lead in the first set, but was soon pegged back as a three-game winning streak saw Anisimova level the score at 5-5.
However, Sabalenka held off two break points on her next serve before earning another vital break to take the set.
That was part of a five-game winning streak as Sabalenka stormed into a 3-0 lead in the second set, looking on course to cruise to victory.
However, she failed to convert six match points when 5-2 up, with Anisimova holding serve. The American only delayed the inevitable, though, as Sabalenka served out the next game to seal her place in the last eight.

She will face Zheng Qinwen for a place in the semi-finals, after the eighth seed outlasted Liudmila Samsonova earlier on Sunday.
Zheng recorded a 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 6-3 victory in a marathon match that lasted just under three hours.
Zheng is the second Chinese player in the Open Era to reach the women's singles quarter-finals at the French Open after Na Li in 2011, en route to the title.
Sabalenka defeated Zheng in each of their first six meetings, but the 2024 Olympic gold medallist got her first win in the head-to-head last month, knocking Sabalenka out of the Rome quarter-finals.
Data Debrief: Sabalenka overcomes Anisimova hoodoo
Sabalenka had lost five of her previous seven matches against Anisimova, with one of those defeats coming at Roland-Garros in 2019.
But given the Belarusian's prowess at making it to the latter stages of tournaments, it was always going to be a big ask for Anisimova here.
Sabalenka is the first player to reach the quarter-finals on 10 consecutive women's singles grand slam main-draw appearances since Serena Williams (also 10 between the US Open 2014 and the Australian Open 2017).
