Frank: Romero has apologised to 'incredible' Spurs team-mates after red card
Thomas Frank revealed that Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has apologised to his team-mates for his red card during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.
Romero was dismissed in the 29th minute at Old Trafford for a reckless challenge on Casemiro in the middle of the park, and that decision proved costly for Spurs.
The Red Devils made their advantage count through Bryan Mbeumo after a well-worked corner routine ahead of half-time, and Bruno Fernandes sealed the win late on.
Spurs are now winless across their last seven top-flight games (D4 L3), their third such run since the start of the 2024-25 season.
They were not helped by Romero's moment of madness, with the Argentine becoming the first player to be sent off twice in the Premier League this season.
It was his fourth red card in the league since he joined the club in 2021, the most of any player during this period and the joint-most of anyone for Spurs in the competition overall (also Younes Kaboul).
And though disappointed by the defeat, which left them 14th in the table, Frank lauded his team for their resilience after playing over an hour with a man fewer.
"Cristian, first and foremost, there is no intention of doing the follow-through and getting a red. He clearly goes for the ball," Frank told TNT Sports.
"Unfortunately, the way the rules are, it becomes a red. Cristian apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room.

"But it is what it is. We need to deal with it. I think a big area we've been working hard on is resilience.
"We didn't get the result out of it, but what the players showed out there on the pitch was incredible. We need to focus on Newcastle [United] on Tuesday."
Spurs had started strongly against Michael Carrick's side, with Conor Gallagher testing Senne Lammens before Joao Palhinha and Xavi Simons had their shots blocked.
Despite going a man down, Spurs still managed to register an expected goals (xG) total of 0.45 from their five shots to United's 0.73 from their 10 attempts in the first half. After the break, though, United bumped up their tally to 1.79, firing off 22 shots overall.
"I think the first 30 minutes were a good away performance at a difficult place against a team with confidence in them and flow," Frank added.
"Then after the red card, I am very proud of the players. The resilience, staying in the game mentality, still being a threat at times, trying to create something – very proud of them.
"Then, of course, we just made the three offensive subs and then we concede the second. I think the last 60/70 minutes, we were playing with 10 men.
"They put everything into it. Very proud of the fans. You could hear them loud throughout the game."
