Joao Fonseca slumped to a surprise third-round exit as Roman Safiullin turned on the style at Wimbledon, defeating the Brazilian breakout star in straight sets.

Fonseca, who reached the French Open quarter-finals and was considered a candidate to go deep at SW19, was simply unable to live with a classy Safiullin display on Friday.

Safiullin triumphed 6-3 6-3 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes, with Fonseca unable to generate a single break in a one-sided affair.

The Russian's decisive break in the first set came in game six, and he had opportunities in all but one of Fonseca's service games, dictating baseline exchanges with power and precision.

The second was a similar story as Fonseca held off ferocious pressure in a marathon third game, only to give up back-to-back breaks at the end of the set.

Several fans in yellow Brazil shirts could be seen dotted around Court Two, and they had hope when Fonseca generated two break points in the third game of the third set.

However, Safiullin brilliantly saved both before converting his fourth break point of game six, and after being given a chance to serve the contest out, he did not disappoint.

The 28-year-old, who is ranked 135th in the world, smashed two huge winners past Fonseca, then, on his first match point, he had all the time in the world to convert after his opponent slipped in the process of returning another deep forehand.

Safiullin's reward could be a last-16 tie against 24-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic, who faces France's Arthur Rinderknech later on Friday.

Safiullin's career-best display?

Safiullin is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, reaching the last eight in 2023 before losing to Jannik Sinner.

But the Russian may never have played a cleaner match than this one, as he completely dismantled one of the rising stars of global tennis.

He generated 15 break points and converted four, while saving all five of the opportunities generated by Fonseca. Safiullin also struck 41 winners to just 18 unforced errors, with his teenage opponent mixing in 32 winners and 25 unforced errors.

It is just the second time Safiullin has made the round of 16 at a grand slam, after that 2023 run. He has done so as a qualifier, coming through three matches last week before shocking Andrey Rublev in round one and Botic van de Zandschulp in round two, both in five sets.

It is also the first time he has claimed three consecutive match wins at ATP level since reaching the last 16 in Shanghai in 2024.
