Alexandra Eala saw her dream run at Wimbledon come to an end as she lost in the fourth round to Jasmine Paolini.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Paolini prevailed 6-4 4-6 6-3 in a close encounter that lasted for two hours and 22 minutes on Centre Court.

Paolini, seeded 13, had been enduring a difficult 2026 season but is now just two wins away from returning to the Wimbledon final, having made the showpiece match in 2024, losing a close battle to Barbora Krejcikova.

Both players struggled for consistency on serve across the opening two sets as the momentum swung in both directions.

Paoloni led 5-2 in the first set but was then broken by Eala to leave the opener hanging in the balance at 5-4.

However, the Italian broke straight back to claim the set and then fended off three break points to keep her momentum going at the start of the second.

But Eala, who stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek in the previous round as she continues to capture the imagination of tennis fans, was not going to go down without a fight and she found the break at her next attempt before going on to level the contest.

With the stakes high, both players improved significantly on serve in the deciding set – particularly Paolini, who won 16 of her 17 first-serve points in set three.

The first seven games in the final set were holds, without even a break-point opportunity being offered up by either player.

It was at that crucial moment when Paolini's greater experience told, as she broke to lead 5-3 and then recovered from 0-30 down as she served for the match to successfully close it out.

Paolini is now the first Italian player in the Open Era to reach multiple Wimbledon quarter-finals in the women's singles.

Kostyuk and Mertens join Paolini in last eight

While Paolini is no stranger to the latter stages of Wimbledon, Marta Kostyuk and Elise Mertens have both made it to the quarter-finals for the first time.

Mertens was eager to break new ground, having lost on her previous three trips to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

And, after coming into the match on a roll having superbly defeated former champion Elena Rybakina in round three, she was able to progress with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Marie Bouzkova.

Kostyuk, meanwhile, won by exactly the same scoreline against American Ashlyn Krueger.

The Ukrainian's latest victory continued a remarkable year that has already seen her reach the French Open semi-finals.

Kostyuk is set to provide Paolini with a stern test in the quarter-finals, while Mertens will face either Madison Keys or Linda Noskova.
