Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record at the China Open with a three-set victory over Yunchaokete Bu.

The 39-year-old came from behind to win 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in two hours and 52 minutes, as he now holds a 31-0 record in Beijing.

In an even first set, Bu made the crucial impact in game seven as he converted a break point at the fourth attempt.

The pair then exchanged breaks early in the second before Djokovic forced a decider via a dominant tie-break win, reeling off five consecutive points.

Djokovic did not look back, racing into a 4-0 lead in the second before sealing victory with his second match point.

Earlier on, Daniil Medvedev also booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-2 win over Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Meanwhile, Arthur Fils reached the last eight at the Japan Open after cruising to a 6-3 7-5 victory over US Open semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe.

Djokovic gaining confidence with historic win

In the Open Era, Djokovic (31-0 in Beijing) has now equalled Rafael Nadal (French Open) for the longest winning streak from his maiden match at a single ATP-level event.

Although home favourite Bu threatened to end the run during the second-set tie-break, Djokovic rediscovered the quality he lacked during the American hard-court swing.

First-round defeats in the Cincinnati Open and US Open had many questioning whether Djokovic could still compete on the Tour, though he is now three wins away from a seventh China Open title.

However, he could truly be tested in the quarter-finals, given he will take on either top seed Alexander Zverev or China's Juncheng Shang.

In Tokyo, Fils claimed his fifth win over a top-10 opponent this season. Only Jannik Sinner has claimed more such victories in 2026 than the Frenchman.
